Custom Media K.K.
“Create, Communicate, Captivate” is Custom Media’s tagline—and for one of our newest sponsors we would add “Community.” That’s because Custom Media cares about the community and is a real friend of the Tyler Foundation. This month we shine the spotlight on Custom Media K.K., a rapidly expanding communications, design and publishing house. Robert Heldt, Managing Director of Custom Media, said: “We have pledged to help the Tyler Foundation through our flagship publications, BCCJ ACUMEN, the official magazine of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan, and WIFM, our bilingual lifestyle and business magazine for Tokyo residents and visitors.”
While WIFM, may ask “What’s in it for me?” Custom Media asked the Tyler Foundation “What can we do?” The Tyler Foundation’s Mark Ferris explained, “We were delighted to be approached by Custom Media to formulate a media partnership which will help the Tyler Foundation inform people through their large and expanding readerships about the work we are doing for families affected by childhood cancer, as well as our fundraising activities.” Custom Media is also the Official Media Partner for the Japan Market Expansion Competition, a program that strengthens the skills of up-and-coming executives and helps foreign companies enter or expand in Japan. They work on the communications, marketing and branding material for major Japanese and foreign multinationals operating here. Robert noted: “As a leading media company, we felt we could utilize our resources to express our corporate social responsibility by supporting a charity in much need of promotion. We looked at a number of NGOs and charities, but chose the Tyler Foundation as it was very active all year round and has introduced many programs that have helped put a smile on the faces of children with cancer and their families during their desperate time of need. We wanted to help spread the message to more people and to help promote its activities and events throughout the year.”
WIFM published a bilingual interview and feature on the Tyler Foundation featuring Kim Forsythe, President, in the WIFM summer 2009 issue. “In addition to advertising and promotion space in both our publications in print and online, we plan to cover key events and report the Tyler Foundation's activities in our publications,” Robert said. Robert told us that Custom Media is especially gratified that they “… get to see first-hand the great things the Tyler Foundation is doing with its Shine On! House and programs it organizes.” Custom Media can experience the impact of their contribution, however big or small, and how it changes the lives of people who really need the help. “This makes us feel like we are a part of the Foundation rather than just sponsors and it is a very rewarding experience.”
In addition to the Tyler Foundation, Custom Media currently supports a UK charity, Help for Heroes, providing free advertising to help raise funds for returning soldiers’ rehabilitation, medical treatment, and reintegration into society.
Mark noted: “We have been impressed by Robert and his team at Custom Media because, although their business is still in its early stages, they have made a significant impact on the Tokyo media community and their work is impressive.” To encourage others, Robert suggested the Tyler Foundation was “…a good cause because you can actually see and feel the positive effect your contribution has on the beneficiaries. The Tyler Foundation is great to work with because the members are clearly genuinely committed to the cause and are very easy and friendly to work with. We think we made the right decision and we hope TF agrees! Mark agrees. “We hope our partnership may continue for many years to come! Thanks Custom Media!”
AMB Property Japan, Inc.
"Every day you wait, could be a day too late,” is the advice of Michael Evans, President and Representative Director of AMB Property Japan, Inc., “...for someone in need of your support.” With that sentiment top of mind, AMB's sponsorship of The Tyler Foundation began in 2009. “AMB provided a timely donation that was utilized for the establishment of the Shine On! Therapy Dog Program. We hope to turn this into a long-term relationship and look forward to continued support from AMB,” noted Mark Ferris.
AMB Property Japan, Inc. (AMB) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMB Property Corporation founded in 1983 and headquartered in San Francisco, California. They are a leading owner, operator and developer of global industrial real estate, focused on major hub and gateway distribution markets in the Americas, Europe and Asia. In 2003 AMB Property Japan was established to support global business initiatives and serve as AMB's sole and exclusive business and operating platform for Japan. Across the globe, AMB has industrial properties built for speed and located near airports, seaports and ground transportation systems. As of 12/31/2009, AMB owned or had investments in properties and development projects totaling approximately 14.4 million square meters, in 47 markets within 14 countries.
Evans told us, “With our Japan headquarters located in Tokyo, and a west Japan office in Osaka, extending our philanthropy to charitable organizations here was a natural, global extension of AMB’s core corporate community involvement and citizenship culture. In 2009, The Tyler Foundation was identified and selected for sponsorship because we strongly believe in the Foundation's objectives.” AMB is committed to supporting the well-being and enrichment of communities where they work and live, and Evans went on to say that “The most rewarding aspects of supporting the Foundation are: the realization that our contribution will assist in providing support to those that otherwise may not have access to support in life- and family-changing events; and, to respect and honor the life and legacy of the child for which the Foundation is named and to support the strong, tangible and personal commitment to the Foundation of its founders.”
In addition to AMB matching the collective contributions of its employees to charitable organizations providing natural disaster relief across the world, among its many employee-driven charitable activities, AMB supports Run for the Cure here in Japan. Evans advises other corporations to consider community involvement with organizations such as the Tyler Foundation because “In this life, there are participants, spectators and commentators. Participants are the only ones that are proactive! AMB looks forward to other opportunities to provide support, as we become more familiar with the Foundation and its full range of activities.” The Tyler Foundation looks forward to that too and extends many thanks to AMB, our March Sponsor. The Tyler Foundation must have the ‘luck of the Irish’ to have friends like you!
Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Dateline: April, 1983. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, The Tyler Foundation is proud and grateful to have Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) as a strong supporter of our mission. Bank of America serves clients in more than 150 countries, including a strong presence in Japan. It is among the world’s leading wealth management companies and is a global leader in corporate and investment banking and trading that serves corporations, governments, institutions and individuals around the world.
But it’s not all business! BAML began its relationship with the Tyler Foundation in 2008. According to Jason Kendy, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Japan, “Philanthropy and community involvement are core principles at our firm--specifically we believe that we should actively contribute to each of the communities where we operate. When we set out to build a long-term philanthropic program in Japan, we decided to focus most of our efforts on local non-profits and charities and particularly those that serve disadvantaged children. The Tyler Foundation’s purpose fits within our giving goals. Too many children and their families are heavily impacted by the challenges of dealing with, and hopefully overcoming, cancer.”
The Tyler Foundation was thrilled to receive, and to announce here, a six million yen contribution specifically intended to assist in launching the Shine On! Counseling and Support Program in Osaka. This will help expand the Foundation’s counseling efforts past what it is already doing at the national children's medical center in Setagaya. Mark Ferris said, “Bank of America Merrill Lynch has made a significant contribution and we are ensuring that their funds are used for a specific, well-defined purpose. Directly due to the generosity of BAML, childhood cancer patients and their families will have access to a Tyler Foundation clinical psychologist in Osaka and many of the support programs and activities brought over from our flagship program in Tokyo.”
Kendy spoke about his firm’s mission and goals in supporting the non-profit community. “Over the past five years, much of our giving and volunteering has centered on foster homes, shelters, and support organizations that improve the lives of kids and families facing tough times,” he said. “Even though Japan is one of the most affluent economies in the world, there are a surprising number of very worthy non-profits here that are not well supported by either public or private donations. While Bank of America Merrill Lynch can only do so much, we hope to ultimately make a difference to some of the many families who depend on these organizations for relief.”
They do! Bringing on a Tyler Foundation clinical psychologist in Osaka will enable us to set up events (like those held in Tokyo) aimed at empowering and enriching the lives of patients such as Shine On! English Club, Shine On! Sports Day, Shine On! Arts, and others.” Ferris commented that, “We are grateful that BAML has enabled us to make such a direct and positive impact to improve the lives of patients and their families.”
According to Kendy, providing financial assistance to the Tyler Foundation and other organizations provides a sense of knowing that slowly but surely a critical need is being addressed. “While our support can never take away the pain and sorrow of childhood diseases, we hope that we can play a small part in easing the challenges families face. For instance, the less a child or parent needs to focus on non-medical distractions and challenges, the more they can concentrate on healing.” In addition to the funding of a clinical psychologist, BAML also made an additional contribution of 500,000 yen to the Foundation's general program at the end of last year. “Sadly one of our veteran employees passed away in August 2009 after a long and courageous battle with cancer,” Kendy explained. “Our donation was made together with her family in her name.”
BAML encourages others to become involved because “supporting a charitable organization, even at a modest level, is very important, particularly in Japan where public support is lower than in other countries. The Tyler Foundation and so many of its peers depend on your contributions to bring real improvements to people's lives.” He concluded, “the Tyler Foundation was established to help fill a void that existed in Japan---we like that spirit and want to ally ourselves with people determined to alleviate obstacles for the future.” In recognition of our January Sponsor, we give millions of thanks to ,Bank of America Merrill Lynch!
Grand Hyatt Tokyo
What has 21 floors, including two basement floors, 389 guest rooms, 10 restaurants and bars, and 13 banquet rooms? The Grand Hyatt Tokyo our September Sponsor Spotlight! Located in the heart of Roppongi Hills, the Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s Grand Ballroom will be the exciting venue for the Tyler Foundation’s Vegas Extravaganza. According to Mr. Christophe Lorvo, General Manager, Grand Hyatt Tokyo “…is a dynamic Lifestyle Destination Hotel that offers a special experience and authentic hospitality.” Boasting uniquely designed guestrooms and suites that feature a selection of natural woods and fabrics and spacious bathrooms that embrace the Japanese bathing experience. Needless to say, the ambience created is ideally residential and relaxing. The restaurants and bars, such as The French Kitchen Brasserie & Bar, The Oak Door, and the richly appointed Maduro (which features nightly entertainment), focus on culinary authenticity, design originality, quality and service. Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s function rooms total 2,800 square meters of conference, banquet and wedding space, advanced technology and a dedicated team of planning specialists. Nagomi Spa and Fitness provides hotel guests and private members with a serene facility for fitness and relaxation.
Grand Hyatt Tokyo has been a Tyler Foundation supporter dating back to the organization’s inception. “We held our first ever major fundraiser, the Sports Extravaganza, at Grand Hyatt Tokyo in 2006. We were a little nervous but quickly recognized that the venue we had chosen was a class act. Not only were the Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s staff responsive to our many requests but they also advised us on food, beverage, room layout, entertainment options, sound, lighting and much more. Their quality assistance and expertise made our event more successful. In addition, their generous donation of prizes directly helps our fundraising efforts. All in all, we're very pleased to be back at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo or our Vegas Extravaganza on October 2nd,” commented Mark Ferris. Lorvo enthused, “Grand Hyatt Tokyo is excited to open the Grand Ballroom doors for Vegas Extravaganza guests with a cordial welcome, sumptuous dishes, immaculate service and a vibrant atmosphere. Above all, guests will feel the Hyatt touch in every detail of our arrangements.”
Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s corporate social responsibility work extends not only to the Tyler Foundation but to the Make-A-Wish Foundation as well. When asked about Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s support of the Tyler Foundation, Lorvo remarked, “We are proud to be a part of the Tyler Foundation and honor their noble cause in making life better for children with cancer and their families. Working with them is highly rewarding and we hope that our participation will assist in bringing hope, strength and joy to the lives of courageous children and their families at a time when they need it the most. Supporting the Tyler Foundation is an uplifting and rewarding activity, in which you will feel a sense of great satisfaction in giving back to the society you belong to.”
The Tyler Foundation thinks working with the Grand Hyatt Tokyo is uplifting and rewarding too! Thanks to the Grand Hyatt Tokyo for all your years of support. We are happy to that you are our host for the Vegas Extravaganza and our special September Sponsor!
Hilton Tokyo
Dateline: April, 1983. Hilton Tokyo , Hilton Tokyo was the wonderful venue for the Tyler Foundation Mystery a la carte fundraiser in 2008. Venue alone is not the full extent of the Hilton Tokyo support of the Tyler Foundation! Mark Ferris noted, “Hilton Tokyo has been a strong supporter for many years. They were gracious hosts of our Mystery a la Carte event in 2008 and ‘went the extra mile’ to accommodate our various requests. One of our themes was food and they put on an extraordinarily good meal using their own top quality chefs and other celebrity chefs.” Centrally located in the Shinjuku skyscraper district overlooking Shinjuku Park, the facility boasts an architecturally interesting and unusual S-shaped design. Towering 38-stories and minutes from the heart of Tokyo’s business and entertainments areas, this 815 room luxury hotel can meet all your needs for accommodation, recreation and relaxation, fine and casual dining and of course, banqueting! According to Momoko Gonohe, in Cluster Marketing Communications, our rooms “…combine the very best in western design with unique Japanese touches such as shoji, yukata robes and slippers.” With international direct dial telephone, as well as high-speed internet access, and large flat screen LCT TV with English channels and multi-lingual broadcasts you can think of your room at the Hilton Tokyo as a luxurious home-away from home.
Not only is the Hilton Tokyo a great place to rest your head, but it is a wonderful community partner! Gonohe remarked that “Hilton Tokyo has been a sponsor for about three years. As a company, we feel responsible to look after less fortunate people and actively supporting OR holding various domestic/international charity events and hosting organizations. We value the partnership with Tyler Foundation and feel privileged to be associated with them.” The Tyler Foundation is privileged as well, for the community spirit extends beyond the Hilton Tokyo. Mark told us, “We have also been supported by their [Hilton Tokyo] ‘sister’ brand, Conrad, thanks to an introduction from Christian Baudat, General Manager at the Hilton Tokyo.”
In addition to providing the venue for our 2008 fundraiser, we were honored to have had the participation of Chef Stephane Gaborieau, winner of the prestigious, Meilleur Ouvrier de France” or MOF (Best Crafts worker of France) and director of the renowned Hilton Tokyo restaurant La Pergolese. La Pergolese is a contemporary dining room offering authentic French cuisine and an extensive range of premier wines. We were thrilled that Chef Gaborieau created a special culinary delight for our Mystery a la carte event at the Hilton Tokyo.!
Yet, that’s not all the Hilton Tokyo does for the Tyler Foundation! Gonohe said, “We usually support Tyler Foundation by offering door prizes for their events.” Mark said, “One of the benefits of working with a group as extensive as Hilton is that they have multiple properties and we have enjoyed prize donations from many of their hotels in an out of Japan.” Gonohe went on to say, “Also when they held their event at the Hilton Tokyo, we supported by offering special conditions. Tyler Foundation is a trust-worthy organization defending a very important cause. It is run by people who are genuine, honest, dedicated and professional. The funds collected are managed professionally and we are very confident working with them.”
In addition to the Tyler Foundation, Hilton Tokyo works closely with other organizations, reviewing requests for assistance very positively. It’s appropriate that at this, the holiday season, we share that for the past 10 years they hold a Christmas Charity party for children in orphanages in Japan. Clearly, children are near and dear to their hearts as they are to ours. So, thanks to Hilton Tokyo! We are happy to shine the holiday lights on our December Sponsor!
United Airlines
Dateline: April, 1983. United Airlines, the Tyler Foundation’s recognized sponsor this month, inaugurated Seattle-Tokyo non-stop service. And they’ve been bringing leisure travelers, business travelers, family and friends, over here ever since! According to Barry Bergmann, Director Sales-Japan for United Airlines, “We began serving Osaka in 1986 and currently we are the only airline to fly from Osaka to the United States (San Francisco). From Tokyo we serve Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington Dulles and Honolulu. We also fly to Beijing, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, and Bangkok.” United is committed to exemplary customer service. They believe that the only acceptable customer experience is one in which you arrive at your intended destination safely, comfortably and on time. In the air and on the ground, online and on the telephone, our customers have the right to expect — to demand — respect, courtesy, fairness and honesty from the airline they have selected for travel. United!
As strong as their commitment to customer service is, United is a strong community supporter as well. In many companies, corporate social responsibility is an integral part of their mission and United is no different! “United is committed to supporting the communities we serve and working with the Tyler Foundation, which has had great success in supporting families facing the challenge of childhood cancer, is a tangible way to achieve that goal,” said Bergmann. Mark Ferris noted that, “It was a pleasure working with United Airlines this year. They provided two business class tickets to San Francisco which formed part of a live auction prize including a stay in Napa Valley. We have to remember that airlines such as United are approached by so many worthy charities through the year and we are grateful that they could contribute to Tyler Foundation. Hopefully, we can build on this and establish a long collaboration. Thanks to Barry Bergmann and his team at United Airlines!”
Bergmann said, “We hope that the small part we have played in this year’s fundraising efforts will encourage others to participate in supporting the Tyler Foundation.” The Tyler Foundation looks forward to future soaring with United Airlines, our November Sponsor Spotlight, so that we may continue to maintain, and indeed, expand our programs. Thanks United Airlines!

Continental Airlines
Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, Continental Airlines, Inc., the world’s fifth largest airline, has been flying the Japan market for 30 years and serves eight cities: Sapporo, Sendai, Niigata, Tokyo, Nagoya, Okayama, Hiroshima and Fukuoka. They also fly to Guam from those eight cities and from Tokyo to New York and Houston daily. Continental consistently earns awards and critical acclaim for both its operation and its corporate culture. Part of the corporate culture, noted Koji Nagata, Director, Corporate Communications Asia/Pacific, Continental Airlines, Inc. is the goal to be “…a better corporate citizen by giving something back to the community we service and the Tyler Foundation is one of the best partners in Japan for us to fulfill our goal. We recognize that the Tyler Foundation is an excellent organization for helping children suffering from cancer in Japan and providing support for their families. In addition, Continental supports several other charitable organizations, such as Make-A-Wish Japan Foundation. “We usually support fund-raising events by donating air tickets…We also donate tickets to children and their family members when their wishes are related to traveling overseas,” said Nagata.
According to Nagata , Continental Airlines has more than 2,750 daily departures throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, serving 133 domestic and 132 international destinations. More than 750 additional points are served via current alliance partners. Continental, with more than 43,000 employees worldwide, has hubs serving New York, Houston, Cleveland and Guam, and together with its regional partners, carries approximately 63 million passengers per year!
Continental recently announced a new non-stop service to Nadi, Fiji from its Guam hub and Honolulu. These new flights to the beautiful Fiji islands in the heart of the South Pacific will commence December 18, 2009. And, some lucky patron at the upcoming Vegas Extravaganza will benefit from Continental’s generous donation this year. Mark Ferris, on Continental Airlines’ involvement with the Tyler Foundation said, “Back in 2006, when we ran our first fundraiser (Sports Extravaganza), we approached Charles Duncan and Nagata-san at Continental Airlines and told them what we were trying to accomplish. They listened sympathetically and each year since they have made an important contribution. Having received tickets to Guam and New York in the past, I am delighted to see that they are providing tickets to Fiji this year - one of their new routes. They are a pleasure to work with and always attend our major events for which we are especially grateful.” Nagata said that for their part, “We are always impressed with the Tyler Foundation’s professionalism. All of the staff is outstanding and passionate, and their fund-raising events are always elegant and innovative. We are always truly honored to be a part of their great charity events.”
For the sixth consecutive year, FORTUNE magazine named Continental the No. 1 World’s Most Admired Airline on its 2009 list of World’s Most Admired Companies. The Tyler Foundation certainly counts Continental among its strong corporate partners and a true supporter of our mission. “We have donated air tickets to their charity fund-raising events to support the Foundation and generate more participants. More participants mean more funds for the Foundation,” Nagata noted. He went on to say that they “…strongly encourage others to join and support the Tyler Foundation…I am confident that you will be able to be a better corporate citizen by joining this great team. Thanks to Continental Airlines, we are happy to shine the light on our August Sponsor!
American Chamber of Commerce Japan
Leadership, advocacy, information and networking: the American Chamber of Commerce Japan (ACCJ) brings this full agenda to Tokyo, Kansai and Chubu. Their mission is to “Further the development of commerce between the United States of America and Japan, promote the interests of U.S. companies and members, and improve the international business environment in Japan.” Of particular note to the community and the Tyler Foundation is the fact that the ACCJ believes that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is essential for fulfilling this mission.
According to Dr. Thomas Jordan, ACCJ President Emeritus and Community Service Advisory Council Chair, “American corporations have had a long history of being responsible participants in the communities they serve. Members of the American Chamber of Commerce have brought this proud tradition to Japan in not only providing new goods and services but also caring for those less fortunate in the communities we live and work in. As a result, the ACCJ established the Community Service Fund in 1997 to administer the contributions collected from its members to support worthy community service projects and other charitable activities.”
Corporate Social Responsibility: Revenue raised by the ACCJ for charity, over JPY 200 million since its inception, is today derived primarily from the annual Charity Ball in Tokyo and “ACCJ walkathons" in the Chubu and Kansai regions. (An ACCJ walkathon in Tokyo will be inaugurated on September 12th this year.) Jordan noted that “The beneficiaries are chosen with two principles in mind. First, the donation should be used in Japan rather than diffused to beneficiaries outside of Japan. And, second, the beneficiaries should be small enough so that the donation made by the ACCJ is a significant contribution to the recipient, allowing certain charitable projects to proceed.” Organizations and efforts receiving donations include: children's homes; the homeless in Tokyo; abused women and children; camps for mentally and physically handicapped children; the Tokyo English Life Line; fight against human trafficking; and, care for orphans and neglected children.
And, the Tyler Foundation! “The ACCJ, through its Community Service Advisory Council and the Community Service Fund, has been a proud sponsor of the Tyler Foundation from its very beginning. It has been our privilege to be partners in this important effort and to play a supporting role in the care of children affected by childhood cancer and other serious illnesses as well as their families,” said Jordan. Mark Ferris noted that the Tyler Foundation is “…fortunate to enjoy a long association with ACCJ. Not only have they been a generous and consistent cash sponsor but, as a member-driven organization, the Tyler Foundation has gained much publicity through their activities. The Community Relations Advisory Council, led by Dr. Tom Jordan with members Barry Bergmann; Ted Johnson; Tom Jordan; Sam Kidder; Vincenso、 Lafino; Mike Makino; Kumi Sato; Jeff Shimamoto and Tom Whitson, has taken an active interest in our programs as they have developed over the years.” Jordan noted the Council is successful due to the hard-working members of the Committee. “It is definitely a team effort !”
Facts and figures: The ACCJ is a membership organization open to individuals and companies of all nationalities. Established in August 1948, the ACCJ is nearing sixty-one years of providing individuals and companies the opportunity to interact with global business leaders during a myriad of events held throughout the year. Some ACCJ stats:
・3,000 professionals from 1,300 globally minded companies and over 40 countries;
・Over 500 events held for members and guests each year;
・JPY 33,839,560 disbursed through the Community Service Fund in 2008
Movers and Shakers: Ferris said, “We welcomed many ACCJ members as runners in our Shine On! Marathon challenge earlier this year - further evidence of their commitment to supporting the community.” The ACCJ provides ample opportunity for members to be involved in influencing the business climate in Japan. The 60+ committees and subcommittees are the “…lifeblood of the Chamber.” Committees and subcommittees are organized in industry, profession, and issue-specific groups. These groups organize events, lectures, and seminars that feature global business leaders, top U.S. and Japanese government officials, industry experts, scholars, Japan specialists and yes, even pop culture icons! The ACCJ maintains close ties with many of these entities to afford members the opportunity to impact policies through advocacy. To advocate, the ACCJ follows its mission and core principles “…which it believes are vital to further developing commerce between the United States and Japan and further improving the international business environment in Japan.” These guiding principles are: a commitment to free market principles; a level playing field; adoption of global best practices; transparent and fair processes; and, CSR. See: http://www.accj.or.jp/doclib/advocacy/CoreAdvocacyPrinciples.pdf for more information.
Pieroth Japan
Did you know that Pieroth Japan K.K.’s warehouse in Yokohama houses one-third of all the wine distributed by the Pieroth’s worldwide group (Wein International Verwaltung)? Laurent Faivre, Managing Director remarked, “It was really amazing for me to come here the first time to the warehouse. There are so many vintages. In Japan you can find whatever you want. Today Pieroth Japan imports over 1,700 wines from 17 countries to satisfy their private and professional clients. Many of the wines imported are grown and produced for Pieroth's worldwide group member companies. Pieroth Japan also represents many of the most reputable estates and wineries from many different countries. Many of the wines come from exclusive family-owned wineries you just can't get elsewhere in Japan.”
The Japan market for Pieroth is filled with customers who really enjoy top wines. Pieroth worldwide group (W.I.V.) boasts impressive statistics as #1 in direct sales and Pieroth Japan is #2 in total turnover of the Pieroth worldwide group (W.I.V.). For the Tyler Foundation, Pieroth is top-rated for their wonderful support. Mark Ferris notes “We’ve been grateful to work with Pieroth for three consecutive years and they’ve made a big difference at our fundraising events. For one thing, they supplied us with some of their premium product and helped us combine this with our menu at each event. Also, thanks to their extensive European connections, they offered one of our prize winners a visit to the Champagne district of France, which made a very special prize. They also attend our events regularly and are a pleasure to deal with.” Faivre noted that “In 2008, we provided wines and Champagne for the “Mystery a la carte” dinner and some old Cognac and Bas Armagnac for the auction.”
Today operating under the Pieroth Eagle logo, Pieroth has a long history. Faivre said, “The Pieroth family traces its origins and wine producing tradition back to 1675 when their ancestor was listed as living in the village of Stromberg, Germany. Stromberg is next to Burg Layen in the Nahe valley where the family's ancestral home and company headquarters are now located.” In an unbroken line, the Pieroth Family has continuously operated the business. Pieroth was ahead of its time in 1958 when they embraced globalization and went beyond their borders into other European nations. In 1969 Japan became its first overseas venture and today Pieroth is successfully established in 23 countries. In another innovation, “They recognized the value of personal relationship and trust…They initiated the "Pieroth Home Wine Tasting" permitting customers to taste and select wines at their leisure at home or in the office, alone or with friends.” Indeed Faivre believes “…this is the reason for the success of the company. Honoring traditional values but going with the times has enabled Pieroth to become the World's No. 1 Direct Sales Wine Company.” Another new innovation started here in Japan is wine-tasting festivals in the big cities of Tokyo (Tokyo Midtown), Osaka, and Yokohama.
Perhaps the long corporate commitment to personal relationships is imbued in the philantrophy of Pieroth. Faivre said, “When I met Mark the first time two years ago I was really interested to do something for the Foundation. These are kids and the story of Tyler is quite moving…and I say if we can help some kids, then this is what we can do. … we and our suppliers believe that the Foundation is worthwhile and it is so important to support children with cancer and their families in Japan. Supporting the Tyler Foundation is a way for us to offer our modest contribution to this noble cause and help ‘make the fight a little easier and the future much brighter’ for all these children.” Faivre said, “…a Japanese proverb says "…if you are looking for the source of the river Yoshino, you can find it in the drops of water on the moss…” He advises, “So join the other drops of water, then small streams that will make one of the largest rivers, a mighty river, which thanks to its power, will sweep the scourge of cancer.” Faivre said, “I think sometimes when we can do something we have to do something. … even a small amount. From my point of view it’s important to do what’s best.”
Pieroth’s continued support is invaluable to the Tyler Foundation and they enjoy seeing the ‘fruits of their sponsorship labor!’ “It is great to see the concrete results year after year, and also all the new projects in progress such as the Animal-Assisted Therapy dog program,” said Faivre. “…as we say in France: “les petits ruisseaux font les grandes rivieres” (small streams make large and major rivers”)…so I would like to thank Kim, Mark and the Tyler Foundation for allowing us to be one of those small streams.” Thanks go to our June Sponsor Spotlight, Pieroth Japan – we raise our glass to you! British Airways
The year: 1948. The event: British Airways started services to Japan. Over 60 years later, British Airways still strives to provide their customers with the best products and services. British Airways continually leads the industry with innovations such as the first flat bed in First Class and in Business Class. The commitment to be more than just a business partner is found in the assistance provided to the Tyler Foundation over the last three years since its inception. Vishal Sinha, Manager Japan and Korea for British Airways, commented, “As a charitable organization the Tyler Foundation relies on support from commercial organizations and we are happy to provide support for fund raising activities. We help the Foundation raise funds to support children suffering from cancer.”
Fast forward 60 years from British Airway’s initial service in Japan. Today, British Airways flies passengers to London non-stop from Narita in less than 12 hours with comfortable seating in the Boeing 747-400 aircraft. According to Sinha, “…the Boeing 747-400 aircraft has more legroom than ever before, a tempting range of catering and entertainment choices, and quieter cabins – enabling passengers to sleep, eat and watch the latest movies in the height of comfort.” Sinha noted that “we have donated business class tickets from Tokyo to London or European cities for auction in events to help raise funds.” Mark Ferris said, “We have worked with British Airways for three years now and they have been very supportive of our Foundation. In addition to providing us with the tickets, they have provided discounted fares for our celebrity guests and have been very flexible with all the arrangements.”
British Airways operates a daily flight from Tokyo Narita to London Heathrow Terminal 5 which is their exclusive home and has just celebrated its first anniversary in March. British Airways has welcomed more than 20 million customers at Terminal 5 during its first year of operations. The £4.3 billion facility gives customers the best travel experience they have had at Heathrow for many years. British Airways is also achieving the best punctuality and baggage performance in almost a decade as a result of the new terminal.
“We have supported the Tyler Foundation for more than 3 years as we believe the work you do is very worthwhile.” Not only has British Airways been generous with their gifts to our events, but Mark adds, “We also appreciate that they take the time to attend our events with their guests.” The Tyler Foundation is happy to have the solid support of our May Shine On! Sponsor, British Airways. Thanks!
Servcorp
When Servcorp was looking for a local charity to support, the Tyler Foundation “stood out well above the rest,” on their short list, according to Olga Vlietstra, Servcorp General Manager for Japan. The Servcorp-Tyler Foundation relationship began about two and a half years ago when Servcorp, a world leader in the serviced office industry, was looking for a way to fulfill a corporate mission to give back to the community. In Japan, Servcorp has “…17 centers that provide office solutions and virtual office solutions to more than 2,000 clients, from start-ups to multinational corporations, both Japanese and International firms,” Vlietstra noted. They researched organizations to support that were local, relatively small and focused on helping Japanese children. In the Tyler Foundation they found a tangible place where the employees could personally help and feel the effect of their efforts. For example, 15 Servcorp team members volunteered at Shine On! Sports Day this past summer! Kim Forsythe, Executive Director of the Tyler Foundation says, this was special because it gives “…Servcorp volunteers an opportunity to meet and give hands-on support to patients and their families and really helps to clarify what they were raising money for and why it's so important.”
“Servcorp is not about simply real estate and offering a place to work – it is about offering an all encompassing environment of service and support using IT solutions developed by us, which cater specifically to the needs of small-medium enterprises. We help companies concentrate on running their business, by offering fully managed, IT-enabled and staffed workspace that allows them to reduce their overheads and gain in efficiency.” Ms. Vlietstra indicated that small businesses can save up to 60% of their normal office expenses. Servcorp though, is not all about business either! According to Kim, they are an “…extra-special sponsor. Not only have they been generous with their donations, but they created a series of small fundraisers in their offices throughout Tokyo. Each mini-event had a theme with matching food, drink and entertainment and a silent auction.”
Vlietstra said, “Supporting the Tyler Foundation creates a lot of motivation within our team - I believe this is very rewarding. In Servcorp we are a ‘big family’ of 150 employees and most of them have encountered cancer either in their own family or in their close surroundings – it makes them feel good to participate in this type of community support. In addition, seeing the positive and rapid results from the donated funds makes it a rewarding experience.
Clients too, are touched by the children and families assisted by the Foundation. With thousands of clients “…that “live” and work with us, we have instant access to raise the awareness of the Tyler Foundation and support the Foundation through fundraising,” Vlietstra reports. Servcorp organizes client functions such as flea markets, auctions, prize raffles, artistic performances. Kim said, “I give a short talk about the Tyler Foundation at most of the events - which is my pleasure to do! But the managers in each location completely organize the events themselves and invite clients who then became aware of, and helped to contribute to, Servcorp's community service activities. What a great idea and a win-win for everyone involved!” One simple, but effective way to raise funds is the placement of vases on all floors of all offices throughout Japan where people just drop in pocket change. Ms. Vlietstra told us that “…we have so far raised a few million yen.” Servcorp has opened a special Tyler Foundation Bank account that they keep adding to as they raise funds. Ms. Vlietstra said, “We hope the donations raised through our client network will be invested in something specific and tangible in the future that tags Servcorp and the Tyler Foundation for the years to come. We would like to be able to tell our clients what they have helped make possible for the children and their families.”
The Tyler Foundation also wishes to give a special thanks to Servcorp’s Chief Executive Officer, Alfred Moufarrige, who matches yen-for-yen all money raised by Servcorp Japan for the Tyler Foundation. Personally!
The Tyler Foundation is gratified by the on-going support of our April Shine On! Sponsor, Servcorp. Thanks!
Allied Pickford
Imagine…you are organizing a Tyler Foundation event and you need to get large things from one place to another. This may be a difficult endeavor but for the wonderful support provided by Allied Pickfords, the premier supplier of moving services. Allied Pickfords, according to Mark Ferris, Tyler Foundation founder, “…provided invaluable assistance in the lead up to our events by transporting many items. Without them, we would have had to move large items ourselves, such as the mobile bar, kegs of beer, auction prizes, etc.)” Allied Pickfords’ activities in conjunction with the “The Entertainment Extravaganza” in 2007 and “Mystery a la carte” in 2008 has been a tremendous support for the Tyler Foundation.
Today the year is 2009, but believe it or not, the Allied Pickfords company dates back almost four centuries! “From the pack horses of the early seventeenth century to the most advanced shipping and transport methods of today, Allied has grown to become the largest dedicated home moving organization in the world,” noted Allied’s General Manager, Scott McCaskie. “Longevity and quality combine to make “Pickfords” synonymous with high quality home moving.” And the Tyler Foundation is thrilled to have “allies” in Allied Pickfords!
Allied Pickfords and the Allied Network is part of SIRVA, the largest moving and relocation services company in the world. With their over 800 offices in more than 40 countries with local offices in Yokohama, Tokyo and Kobe, Allied is ready to help residential or office clients. Daryl Rogers, Corporate Manager commented that “Whether the move is within the city, across the country, or international, we show the same care and concern to all. Our combination of highly skilled multi-lingual local and expatriate office staff, supported by English speaking Move Supervisors and trained packers ensure a thoroughly smooth relocation.”
When asked about Allied’s support of the Tyler Foundation, McCaskie said “…this is our way of returning something small to the foreign – and of-course Japanese – community. Thinking about how we could provide some assistance to the Tyler team as part of our everyday business, we thought this is best way for Allied to support the Foundation…. seeing how the Foundation has grown…has been inspiring. Now the Shine On! House is almost ready to open in April and as one of the landmarks for the team, it has been a pleasure to assist in the chain of events to get them this far.”
Allied Pickfords’ has provided some much needed behind the scenes assistance with the logistics of events. Ferris notes, “They fit in around our schedule (which changed by the minute) and saved us time and cash.” There were a number of items to be picked-up and delivered to the venue from various sponsors/vendors in and around the Tokyo area. Allied handily arranged for these items to picked-up and delivered ready for the evening’s entertainment. And, very importantly, returned them to their respective owners the following day. Allied hopes to be able to assist again this year for our October 2nd fete!
The current Shine On! Marathon Challenge is a representative example of the unique ways in which the Tyler Foundation seeks to bring visibility to the care and comfort of pediatric cancer patients. McCaskie commented that it is, “A perfect example of how the Foundation tries to adapt to the changing environment…It provides a platform for each runner to try to raise something, no matter how big or small, for a truly worthy cause. As such, whether you are part of a global corporate or an individual, doing what and as much as you can, really does make a difference.” Shine On!
There seems to be no limits to the boundaries that the Tyler team can go to and to continue to raise awareness in a country that does not necessarily put sponsorship and charity at the forefront of daily life…” said Rogers. The Tyler Foundation is gratified by the on-going support of our March Shine On! Sponsor, Allied Pickfords. Thanks!
Infinity Diamonds
Since When and Why?
Infinity Diamonds sponsorship of the Tyler Foundation dates back right to the time of the Foundations’ inception. Alok and Mark Ferris also go a long way back as friends, having met in Tokyo almost 15 years ago.
Alok saw the pain and the fight put up by both Tyler and his family. The ups and downs in his health, the phases of hope and the periods of despair. And yet through all this we would see their unflinching determination and perseverance. “When cheerfulness is kept up as a principle against all odds, it is the finest form of courage.” To Alok and his wife Mayumi, Mark and Kim have been an inspiration of that courage and strength.
Tyler brought joy to them in his short life but the pain which also existed brought about an inner awareness about giving back to the Japanese society not only for the amazing love, care and treatment received from the doctors and nurses but also for seeing the void which existed in the palliative care for children and their families suffering because of cancer.
Infinity continues to support the Foundation not because it is a personal equation but because of the sincerity and honesty in their work. "They lead selflessly and by personally extending themselves. The work done by them in only three years has been outstanding and exemplary. "
About Infinity
Infinity Diamonds, is a niche player supplying a niche product—high-quality diamonds of all ranges, shapes, sizes and colors. Established by Alok Rakyan, with an aim to provide diamonds and jewelry of the finest quality at wholesale prices, well below the prevailing retail prices, filling a void which existed in the market.
Infinity caters a lot to the foreign clients who don't necessarily go to the Japanese retail shops to buy. Clients who come to Infinity are repeat clients who come not just because they find the best deals in the market but because they know they can trust what we tell them and provide a service which is not matched by rivals in the industry.
Infinity also takes pride in making sure that all our diamonds are conflict free by guaranteeing each stone along with providing Grading certificates.
Message
For all the medical advancement, cancer is still a terrifying illness. Some might be lucky to detect it in the initial stage or others may have a prolonged life with relatively pain-free treatment. It is through foundations like Tyler that we can hope to alleviate and ease the pain of the families and children who are affected. We as people tend to ignore this illness as long as we as a family or friends are not affected by it. However, we need to understand that cancer today is so rampant that it could happen to anyone of us at any time. Therefore these issues need to be addressed by the society as a whole.
And for Infinity Diamonds sponsorship is a small contribution towards this cause.

Mark Ferris noted, “Alok has been an important advisor from inception of the Tyler Foundation. He has helped us reach parts of the Tokyo community through his network that would have otherwise been unobtainable to us. His donations of diamonds for each of our fundraisers have been used as (very differentiated) auction prizes and generated a great deal of cash for the auction.”
Wall Street Associates
Tell us a little about Wall Street Associates:
Wall Street Associates is a Japanese Employment Agency. Our company’s strength is introducing bilingual Japanese candidates to foreign capital companies in Japan. Established 10 years ago, WSA has an excellent knowledge of the domestic market, and close connections with all the best companies. WSA covers both permanent and temporary Accounting and Finance, HR, Supply Chain Management, Banking, IT, Sales and Marketing and Engineering positions in a variety of industries. The company has grown rapidly, and we now have offices in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya. Looking to advance your career, or fill a position? Visit our website at: www.wallstreetjapan.com / www.wsa.jp !
How long has Wall Street Associates been a sponsor of the Tyler Foundation? Why, and in what ways do you support us?
Our President Nick Johnston is a good friend of the Tyler Foundation’s founder Mark Ferris; the two have known each other for over 10 years. Mark helped Nick set up business in Japan. We have been involved with the Tyler Foundation since it’s founding. Beginning with active participation in sporting events such as the Golf Extravaganza, Nick went on to initiate the first small scale Shine On! Marathon Challenge in 2007. The next year WSA helped Mark and Kim organize the Challenge on a much bigger scale. Last year WSA acted as Project Manager; organizing PR, the website, pre- and post events, and coordinating the event on the day. This year we will be assisting with overall planning and promotion and Runner Recruitment. WSA also supports other Tyler Foundation initiatives such as the fall event, Mystery Ala Carte where we had a corporate table and made a donation. It was a great success, constituting yet another very enjoyable way to raise funds for a good cause.
What is most rewarding about working with the Tyler Foundation?
It’s great to be able to see immediate results! To see where funds raised are going, and the affect our efforts are having upon people’s lives. Visiting a hospital, it’s very satisfying to see how the Tyler Foundation is helping children with cancer, making life easier for them and their families. Seeing the Shine On! House grow from a dream and come to fruition as a real sanctuary has been extremely satisfying! We are enthusiastic to keep up our fundraising efforts, and excited to see the second stage of the Shine On! House’s development.
What message would you give to others who want to support the Tyler Foundation?
The Tyler Foundation’s focus is Japan. It’s a great way to help people right here, close to home. Although the Japanese health care system is good, children with cancer and their families can find the hospitalization process very difficult. The Tyler Foundation makes things easier to handle.
Please share anything else you'd like about the company, the Tyler Foundation, or other.
WSA has five of it’s own staff entered to run in the Shine On! Marathon Challenge. We hope they’ll be able to raise a lot in sponsorship, and we’ll be there with a big support team on the day!
